“West-2017” strategic exercises of the armed forces of the Russia and Belarus was started today on the territory of the two countries, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

“West-2017” are held under the leadership of the chiefs of the general staffs of the armed forces of Russia and Belarus and are the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the two states.

The main objectives of the exercises are “to improve the interoperability of headquarters at various levels, to interfacing prospective command and control systems for troops and weapons, to get commanders of all levels of military planning and command and control practices based on the experience of modern armed conflicts,” the press release says. .

“Heads of military command and control units, commanders of all units and formations, involved in exercises, were handed packets with directive instructions of the General Staffs of the armed forces of the Union States to carry out educational and combat tasks,” the report said.


At six training grounds – Lepel, Losvido, Borisov, Osipovich, Ruzhansky, Domanovsky and a section of the Dretun area, located on the territory of Belarus, and three polygons – Luga, Strugi Krasnye “and” Pravdinsky “- on the territory of the Russian Federation it is necessary to work out tactical episodes with firing, extensive use of the forces and means of aviation and air defense troops.

According to official data, up to 12,700 servicemen take part in the maneuvers (of about 7,200 from Belarus, about 5,500 from the Russian Federation). It involved up to 70 aircraft and helicopters, up to 680 units of military machines, including about 250 tanks, up to 200 guns, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, up to 10 warships, it was informed.
